Asparagus

Milestone, Sandea and Valor are being evaluated for weed control in asparagus. Sandea provides good nutsedge and perennial pepperweed control. Valor is a current IR-4 project, and a crop tolerance is being pursued for asparagus.

Broccoli

Authority (sulfentrazone) is safe applied preemergence in broccoli at 0.11 to 0.15 lb ai/A and provides excellent shepherds-purse control. The manufacturer has not yet decided whether to register Authority in California, so no further work is planned in the short term. Pyridate at 0.23 lb ai/A applied postemergence provided acceptable weed control and was safe on the crop.

Celery

Dual Magnum and sulfentrazone have been evaluated in celery, and have provided good weed control and were safe on the crop.

Lettuce

Roundup Ready lettuce has been evaluated, and provides excellent control of most weeds in lettuce except burning nettle and little mallow. Crop tolerance is excellent.

Muster herbicide will be evaluated in lettuce in 2002.

Onions

Valor provided excellent weed control in bulb onions when applied at the 2-leaf stage of onion. However, crop tolerance was much better at the 6-leaf stage. Valor was evaluated in green bunching onions, but crop tolerance was not acceptable.

Tomato

Roundup Ready tomato was evaluated, but the crop tolerance was not acceptable.

Dual Magnum has a section 18 for use on processing tomato. Dual Magnum + Shadeout or Dual Magnum + Devrinol are excellent preemergence treatments in tomato.

Sulfosulfuron was safe on tomato and provided control of dodder. However, this herbicide has difficult plantback restrictions, for example, only wheat can be planted within 12 months after use.

General

DRA35 is a very effective organic approved burndown "herbicide" product. It provided excellent control of small weeds.
