Lipid Biosynthesis Inhibitors

Common Herbicides in the Group:

  • diclofop (Hoelon)

  • sethoxydim (Poast)

  • fluazifop (Fusilade DX, Fusilade 2000)

  • clethodim (Select, Prism)

  • fenoxaprop (Whip, Acclaim)

How Applied:

Foliar applied, diclofop has both foliar and limited soil activity.

Movement in the Plant:

Movement of these herbicides occurs in both the phloem with photosynthate and the xylem with water and nutrients.

Mode of Action:

These herbicides inhibit the production of lipids which are important to the production of plant membranes. This results in the death of the tissue within the growing points of plants.

Common Symptoms:

Stunting and death of tissue within the growing points. Symptoms usually only occur on grasses.

Effects of Lipid Biosynthesis Inhibitors:

corn plant

The new leaves are easily removed from the top of this corn plant due to death of the growing point. This plant had been treated with sethoxydim ten days previously.
