You can read about University of California weed science research but it’s hard to beat seeing it in person while networking with researchers from around the state. That’s why pest control advisors, crop protection company cooperators, faculty, students and regulatory officials continue to gather at UC Davis for Weed Day to get a sense of the ongoing weed management research that is being conducted.
This year’s 66th Annual Weed Day will be held Tuesday, June 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The morning session will begin with a field tour and demonstration of various weed control technologies. Then, after lunch, UC weed scientists will present information on projects that are either not in-season or located too far off-campus for viewing.
“Studying weeds, their impacts on crops and natural areas, and the pros and cons of various control strategies is at the core of what many of us do in our research and extension programs” says Cooperative Extension Specialist Brad Hanson, chair of this year’s event. “This year, we’re changing things up a little in the morning and will have demonstrations of four examples of innovative weed control technologies. We’re looking forward to observing and discussing aerial spraying with a UAV, a targeted precision sprayer, a robotic laser weeder, and two types of electrical weeders for perennial crops. After lunch, we’ll have research presentations that touch on the wide range of weed control research being conducted by UC campus and county-based cooperative extension scientists and students.”
